WHAT IS A MIDWIFE?

The term “midwife” means “with woman” and describes an individual who has successfully completed a midwifery education program and is legally licensed to practice midwifery. Midwifery is health profession encompassing pregnancy, childbirth (including newborn care), and postpartum care, along with routine sexual and reproductive health services for women throughout their lives. Midwifery education may be in addition to or independent from a nursing degree. A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is first licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) and then is further educated, at the graduate level, in midwifery. A midwife spends time with women and their families providing information and resources to help with informed decisions.  Midwives provide expert, personalized care to women based on research and evidence.  Midwives believe birth is normal and treat it as such until/if there is a deviation from that normal.  They are trained to identify abnormal and refer to physician care as needed.  They do not rely on a routine set of procedures to manage care, instead tailor care to meet the desires and needs of each woman and baby.

MIDWIFERY MODEL OF CARE

The Birth Center operates in the Midwifery Model of Care, which is based on the policy that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes. This includes:

Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle.

Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, as well as postpartum support.

Minimizing technological interventions.

Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention. The application of this woman-centered model of care has proven to reduce the incidences of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

SAFETY

As the only State Licensed freestanding, midwifery operated clinic in the area, The Birth Center offers women a home-like place to birth their babies naturally, in safety and confidence.
