Ruth is the Founder/Owner/Director and primary Nurse Midwife at The Birth Center. Born out of her appreciation for her own nurse-midwife assisted birthing experience, she knew that she could make it possible for other women to have that same, satisfying, empowering experience of un-medicated, supported birth. To do that, Ruth returned to school to earn her Post-Master’s as a Nurse Midwife, after having worked as an RN and Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Sacramento community for years.
The Birth Center was then established by Ruth Cummings in 2000, the first nurse-owned birth center in the Sacramento area. The Birth Center, California State Licensed as an Alternative Birth Center, was the only hospital-independent birth center in Sacramento area until 2019.
IN 2015, Ruth added International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, (IBCLC) to her credentials, to further enhance lactation consultations at The Birth Center. As an IBCLC, Ruth is experienced and trained to diagnose and treat both lip and tongue ties, a common but relatively little known impediment to breastfeeding success for mothers and their babies.
Ruth has personally “caught” 790 babies as a nurse midwife. As you can see from reviews, birth stories, posts both here and at TBC’s website (sactobirth.com), she is well-known and valued in The Birth Center community for her knowledge and expertise, her calm and clear guidance in labor, her commitment to empowering women to equip themselves to birth with confidence.
